Why London Tap Water Leaves White Marks on Taps and How to Stop It

A client on Cranley Gardens in Muswell Hill once handed me a bottle of chrome polish and asked why it had given up on her. The polish was fine. She had been rubbing it into a mixer tap carrying a fortnight of dried Thames Water, and no polish on the market shifts calcium carbonate. That white bloom around the base of a spout, the cloudy ring where the water pools, the chalky freckles on the tiles behind – one substance, arriving invisibly, several times a day, out of water that looks perfectly clear leaving the tap.

I spend a fair portion of every week on this single problem, in flats from Bermondsey to Ruislip, and the pattern almost never changes.

What Is Dissolved in London’s Tap Water?

Rain falling on the Chilterns and the North Downs soaks into chalk. Chalk is calcium carbonate, near enough insoluble in pure water, but rainwater carries dissolved carbon dioxide and that turns it into a weak carbonic acid capable of eating through the stuff over geological time. What comes out the far end, in the boreholes and the river, is calcium bicarbonate in solution. London’s supply typically runs somewhere in the region of 250 to 320 milligrams per litre expressed as calcium carbonate, which puts almost the whole capital in the hard to very hard bracket.

Bicarbonate stays dissolved only while the water stays water. Let it evaporate off warm chrome and the carbon dioxide escapes, the chemistry reverses, and calcite crystallises out in place. Which is to say: the mark on your tap is the mineral that was always there, minus the water that was carrying it.

Heat speeds it up considerably. Push the water past roughly 60°C and the bicarbonate breaks down without waiting for evaporation, which is why the hot tap in a Streatham bathroom always scales before the cold one, and why the inside of the kettle goes first of all.

Does the hardness change depending on where you live?

Marginally, and not enough to matter. Affinity Water pulls from chalk boreholes across Harrow, Hillingdon and up through Watford, and the water arriving on Pinner Road is about as hard as water gets in England. SES Water covers Sutton, Cheam and much of Croydon from the North Downs chalk – same story. Thames Water supplies the bulk of the centre from a mix of river abstraction and groundwater, and because the Thames itself drains a chalk catchment, the reservoir-fed supply is barely softer than the borehole-fed one.

I have worked in every London borough and never once seen a household spared this. Anyone who tells you their corner of the city has soft water has confused softness with low chlorine.

Why Do Taps Show It Before Anything Else Does?

Geometry, mostly. A tap is a warm metal object sitting under a source of splashing water, curved so that droplets collect in the same few spots every time: the underside of the spout, the join where the body meets the deck. Water beads there, sits for twenty minutes, then disappears upward and leaves its solids behind. Do that eight times a day for a month and you have a crust rather than a smear.

Basins and worktops get wiped. Taps get rinsed and abandoned.

The other thing is optical. Deposits on white ceramic are white on white and go unnoticed for weeks. On polished chrome they sit against a mirror finish and every single one is visible from the doorway.

Which finishes will punish you for a mistake?

Standard chrome plate over nickel over brass tolerates a lot: mild acid, repeated exposure, hot compresses, provided the plating is thick and the nickel beneath it is intact. Cheap imported mixers with thin plate develop pinholes, acid gets underneath, and you end up with grey blistering that no amount of cleaning reverses.

Brushed brass and gunmetal with a genuine PVD coating are tougher than chrome and largely indifferent to citric acid. Matt black is the one that catches people out, because half the matt black taps sold in London are PVD and the other half are powder-coated or lacquered, and the coated ones go patchy and grey after two or three acid treatments. If you cannot tell which you have, assume the worse one.

Unlacquered brass and living-finish copper – the sort of thing that turns up in renovated Victorian terraces around Chase Side in Enfield – will react visibly to any acid at all. That is the intended behaviour of the finish. It is also why I keep a separate cloth and a bottle of nothing but warm water for those jobs.

What Removes the Marks Without Wrecking the Tap?

Citric acid. Powdered, from a wholesaler, mixed at roughly a tablespoon to 250ml of hot water. It costs almost nothing, chelates calcium properly rather than just dissolving it, has no vinegar reek, and rinses away clean. This is the single thing I would change about how most London households clean their bathrooms.

The application matters more than the solution. Spray an acid onto a vertical chrome surface and you achieve very little, because it runs off in four seconds and contact time is what does the work. Tear off two sheets of kitchen roll, soak them, and wrap them around the affected part of the tap so they stay in contact. Leave it twenty minutes for light scale, forty for a bad case. Come back, and the deposit either wipes off with a thumb through a microfibre or lifts with a fingernail.

For the sculpted deposit that builds where the spout meets the base, a wooden cocktail stick works. Metal picks and steel wool do not, and this is where most self-inflicted damage happens – a scoured tap has thousands of micro-scratches, every one of which is a fresh nucleation site, and it will scale faster afterwards than it did before. Same principle applies to cream cleaners with abrasive in them. They win this week and lose the year.

Trade descalers built on sulfamic or phosphoric acid clear heavy scale in five minutes. I own some. I use them on ceramic and toilet pans, rarely on chrome, never on nickel or anodised aluminium, because they dull plating on repeat contact and nobody notices until month four.

Then there is the surface underneath. Acid on marble, travertine, limestone or terrazzo etches it permanently, and the number of Victorian bathrooms across Fulham and Barnes that have marble or reclaimed stone worktops under the tap is higher than you would guess. Check what you are standing the solution on before you soak anything.

Have you looked inside the aerator?

The aerator is the mesh insert screwed into the end of the spout, and on a hard water supply it turns into a limescale factory inside a year. Scale narrows the holes, the flow goes crooked and splashy, splashing puts more water on the tap body, and the marks get worse. Unscrew it, most come off by hand, drop it in citric solution for half an hour, brush it with an old toothbrush and put it back. Do that every couple of months and the visible marking on the tap body drops noticeably without any change to how you clean.

Nobody does this. It takes four minutes.

Is a Water Softener Worth the Money?

Yes, and I will say so knowing it reduces the amount of work people need from someone like me. Which is to say: I would rather you spent the money once than paid me to fight the same deposit for a decade. A properly installed ion-exchange softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium before the water reaches any fitting in the house, and the white marks stop. Not diminish – stop. Taps dry clear, shower screens stay clear, the kettle stays clean, and the soap suddenly lathers so aggressively that everybody spends a fortnight using far too much of it.

Installed cost sits in the high hundreds to low thousands depending on the unit and the pipework, plus salt. Convention says you keep one unsoftened tap at the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking, and a competent installer fits that as standard.

What I will be blunt about: the magnetic and electronic devices that clamp onto the rising main do not stop white marks on your taps. Whatever they may or may not do to the crystal structure inside your pipework, the minerals are still dissolved in the water coming out of the spout, and when that water evaporates they are still deposited on the chrome. I have cleaned taps in houses with those units fitted on Wandsworth Bridge Road and in Bow. The scale was exactly where it always is.

What changes elsewhere in the house?

Boilers and immersion heaters stop losing efficiency to furred elements. Shower screens are the big one, because glass does not just collect deposits. Repeated scaling and acid cleaning leaches silica out of the surface and etches it, and past a certain point the cloudiness is in the glass and no product on earth brings it back. That is a screen replacement.

What Routine Holds Up Over a Year?

Dry the tap. That is most of it, and it is the advice people ignore hardest because it sounds too small to work. Water that never evaporates on the metal never leaves anything behind. Hang a microfibre on the towel rail nearest the basin and give the tap eight seconds after the last use of the morning.

Then a citric wipe once a week, an aerator soak every couple of months, and a squeegee kept in the shower.

Where does professional cleaning fit into this?

On the backlog, not the maintenance. A deep clean strips a year of built-up deposit off tapware, screens and tiling in a way that a domestic routine will not, and it gives you a clean baseline to hold. You hold it after that. Anyone selling you a monthly visit to manage limescale on a household of two is selling you a subscription to a problem that a microfibre solves.

I looked after a flat off Roman Road in Bow for three years where the tenant did nothing but the drying, no acid at all, and her taps stayed better than the ones in a Chelsea house that got professionally cleaned monthly. Which is to say: the eight seconds beats the forty minutes, every time, and the forty minutes only exists because nobody does the eight seconds.

The taps on Roman Road were budget Screwfix mixers, incidentally. Still fine when I stopped going.
