Spring Cleaning Tips

Maintain your limestone floor with the OPH guide to cleaning limestone floors.

Routine Cleaning

Sweep regularly using a dry dusting mop with microfibre cloths as dirt and grime can damage your limestone floor.

Limestone is calcium based and may be sensitive to acids so for routine mopping use a concentrated tile cleaner with a low PH value. Avoid using detergents that have a high PH as they will leave the floor greasy and attract dust and dirt.Leave the solution on for 10 minutes or so but do not allow to dry.Change the water frequently to prevent dirt and grime carried on the mop becoming engrained in the flooring.

Because limestone is a soft, porous stone, any spillage should be wiped away as quickly as possible to prevent staining. Mop any surface liquid with paper towels and for sticky substances apply a few drops of washing up liquid to a sponge and wipe clean. A mild bleach solution can be used to clean any persistent stains.

Detailed Cleaning

Your limestone floor will benefit from a periodic detailed clean using a high alkaline solution. This can be purchased from your manufacturer or online. Ensure there is good ventillation as high alkaline solutions usually emit fumes.
