Hamsters are one of the most popular pet choices for young children. This page will provide you with spring cleaning tips on how to clean a hamster cage as safely, effectively and hassle free as possible.

In order to conduct an effective clean the following cleaning products and accessories shall be required.

Secure box – Nothing ground breaking here, and probably like teaching your grandma to suck eggs. Whilst you clean your hamster's cage your twitchy nosed little friend will need somewhere safe and secure to relax while you do all the work. Ensure the box or container has high sides and is made of a material they can't chew or soil their way through. If you desire to use a lid, then ensure the container contains lots of breath holes. Boxes made from wood, hard plastics, glass, or even a spare cage should suffice. Preferably I would used a hamster ball; not only will it keep your hamster safe while you clean but it'll give it a bit of exercise.

Old newspaper - The newspaper isn't for your hamster to read in between spins on its wheel, but to line the bottom of the cage. Soiled sawdust can be extremely difficult to remove from the bottom of cage once it dries in. The newspaper acts as a barrier so next time you clean the hamster cage it will make your life easier.

Old toothbrush - Again, not to be used to clean your hamster huge gnawing teeth, but to clean tricky areas such is the bars of the cage and the runs on the hamster wheel.
